Statistics say that once a week, a child under the age of 12 dies from a gun accident in the US. The majority of these situations occurred out of the same circumstances, with an unsecured, loaded firearm and a moment of negligence.
From these statistic gun owner should take the necessary precaution to prevent this from happening. Gun safes or a safe room to secure these firearms do not end up in children hands for them to experiment with.
Putting away your firearms do not assume that if you put it up high that the young toddler can reach it. You will be surprised that they do climb and do it without any fear.
I can remember when my son had just started to walk. I bought my first computer and he saw me a couple of times come to the desk sat down and push the button on the computer to start it up. He climbed into that chair onto the table and pushes the button the same way.
So I decided to buy a UPS and put it up higher and in order for that computer to come on, there was a thin button on the UPS you had to push first then the on button on my computer. I believe he saw the new way I switch it on because he was always around. I came out one day to find him in front of the computer with it switch on.
So don’t assume, there are always watching and there are very inquisitive at their age. If you keep loaded firearms with a toddler in the home, take the extra step of putting the firearms up high and using a locking mechanism on the weapon itself. A safe is paramount when young children are around.
Young children should be instructed that firearms are dangerous. A good video of what firearms can do, the danger of them in the hands of untrained person how they should be handled etc is a good tool for making young children between the ages of 7 to 12 years. Some people believe you can take them to a range and be properly supervised in the dangers of firearms.
Accidents will happen, but most of the accidents come down to negligent. Firearm accidents can be avoided if gun owners take the responsibility to secure their weapons when necessary, and take steps to educate their children when they reach the appropriate age. It only takes less than second to pull a trigger. Just take the extra 30 or 40 seconds, every time, to properly secure your weapons.
There have been too many children dying in the US every year after playing around with their parents’ or relative guns. There is a simple and effective solution to limiting these tragedies of it happening. “Lock up your guns”. Place them into a safe.
In Florida, over recent months, there has been an unfortunate spike in the number of children shot whilst playing with weapons. The accidental deaths have deeply affected the state, and have led some gun stores to give out free sales to their customers.
If even a small safe is beyond your budget or does not suit the way in which you use your firearms, individual gun locks can be a good option. This device can make a gun impossible to use even outside a safe and can be bought for as little as $7.
At the risk of repeating ourselves, in our opinion locking up your weapons when not in use is one of the primary tasks of any responsible gun owner. If you own guns, you should know where they are at all times, and keep them locked up as much as possible.
Doing so protects not only your treasured guns but also your family.
